I saw some commercials for 2 different dating sites, so, I jumped in. After I input some profile information, and a couple of RECENT pictures - WOW - I had an overwhelming response. I'm not complaining that people responded, but I had hundreds of messages from just the first day, I couldn't answer everyone, so I had to devise some kind of culling system which I have stated quite directly in my dating profile.
First, if the guy who contacted me ONLY said "Hi" in the subject line, and/or the body of the message - I deleted him. Yes, it's a nice that I received a message at all, but that may be LESS than the bare minimum effort. What does LESS mean in a dating profile? I looked up Internet slang and e-dating, and LEES was in there (meaning: attractive man or woman), but not LESS.
Next: Non-smokers only. If they smoke "socially only", they are a smoker. Delete.
Next: Any person of interest must live geographically close, or travel to the NYC area often. I would of course travel when I could, but I'm a freelancer, and my job is in the NYC area, I'm looking for a partner to share experiences with, not a pen-pal - so if he lives too far away - delete.
Moving forward: After a couple of messages, if the other person couldn't strike up anything more to say than "tell me more about yourself", and they themselves haven't shared, delete, delete, delete.
Then, I shut off instant chat (the pop-ups were making any kind of typing impossible). I've made my profile appear offline at all times. I set age parameters in the settings so men outside of that couldn't see or contact me.
Some of this seems harsh, but it all did lead me to now chatting with several nice people, one of whom I met in a Home Depot (not romantic, but it was too late for coffee, and I wanted to meet in a public place), more on that later.
I was suppose to meet a different guy another evening, but I canceled because I chickened out - but I did call and cancel early in the day - NOT just 10 minutes before we were suppose to meet.
This will be my place to write it all down. This is an interesting world of e-dating.
People I'm corresponding with:
Man: The Anti-Money Laundering Investigator (AMLI), met him at Home Depot - not sure at all about him. I changed his name.
( ): The Vet
Mike: The Embryologist
Barry: The Shy IT Guy - maybe meeting him for dinner this week.
Tony: The Italian Teacher
Don: The Construction worker, I may meet him for coffee and bowling one morning.
Dan: The Police Sargent
Vincent: TBD
